Venita Dawson Curry, widow of Howard Curry, Jr., died December 13, 2017 following a brief hospitalization. The only child of the late Lyle R. and Lucile S. Dawson, she was born May 15, 1930 in Pekin, Illinois. After living in several different states, the family moved to Lexington, KY in 1945. A UK Fellow, she was a 1950 graduate of the University of Kentucky, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, Mortar Board and Phi Beta Kappa.

Venita and Howard Curry, Jr. were married on October 15, 1950. She worked as a medical technologist until becoming a full time mother in 1954. After their children were in high school, she especially enjoyed working with her husband as secretary-treasurer of Howard Curry Shoes, until they sold the 43 year-old business in 1991 because of his ill health. He died of pancreatic cancer in 1993 at age 64.

A member of Lexington’s Second Presbyterian Church since 1949, she had been actively involved in various church activities. Other major memberships and commitments over the years included P.E.O. Sisterhood, Lexington Woman’s Club, school and Fayette County PTA Boards, Alpha Gamma Delta Alumnae and House Corporation and Woman’s Club of Central Kentucky.

After living in Lexington 60 years, she moved to Colorado Springs, CO in 2005 to be near her daughter and family. Here she affiliated with Gateway Presbyterian Church, Woman’s Club of Colorado Springs, and continued in P.E.O.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet C. Winger and husband Albert P. Winger, Monument; one son, Raymond H. Curry, M.D. and wife Kristi L. Kirschner, M.D., Chicago; and four grandsons, W. Thomas Vaupel, Colorado Springs; Joseph H. Vaupel, Fort Collins, CO; Samuel D. Curry, Lake Forest, IL and William H. Curry,Oberlin, OH.

A Memorial Service will be held at Gateway Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, December 26 at 10:30 a.m., with a reception immediately following. A Memorial Service in Lexington will take place at a later date. Burial in Lexington Cemetery will be private.
