Obituary for Phillip "Jack" John Woods

Phillip “Jack” John Woods was born on February 29, 1924 with twin brother, Frank Junior Woods in Emporia, Iowa to Frank Emerson Woods and Louise Henrietta Schroeder and passed away on June 30, 2018 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

He was a leap year baby who acted his age of twenty-three.

Jack was raised on rural electricity, outhouses and unpaved roads surrounded by horses and wagons. Growing up, noisy steam engines rolled into town on dirt roads and bi-planes would land in the surrounding fields offering rides. Jack had always wanted to fly; even building his own airplane with his twin brother, Frank in Frank’s garage in Lakewood, Colorado. The love of science didn’t stop with the twins either; older brother Donald would often shut the lights off in Las Animas with his tesla electrical equipment from the attic until one day government officials came in to the house to confiscate Donald’s equipment, also taking a wooden airplane of Jack’s for the fun of it and upsetting him once he returned home from service.
During high school, Jack worked one summer on the Cato, earning a terrific sunburn, as well as a gas station where he listened to war tensions rise on the radio and at 19 joined the Army Air Corps during World War II, serving from 1943 to 1945 then transitioning to serve in the Air Force. He flew twin-engine glass-nose beeches in Texas for Bombardiers to receive target training on the Norden bombsite.

Jack loved Las Animas and later went on to serve as Post Master after receiving the highest scores on the tests and continued pursuing his passion for aviation through a small airplane buy/sell business. He married Iola Savola Schroeder and they raised three children; Ron, Jacque, and Kevin.

He felt the Spirit through music and loved the gospel, leading a Methodist choir and taking a part in a handbell choir.

Jack was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints September 1997 and went on to marry Karen Elaine St. Germain Woods on November 14, 2000 and sealed their vows in the Denver Temple on Karen’s birthday, December 26, 2001.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents; Frank and Louise, and older brother, Donald. He is survived by his wife, Karen Woods, children; Ron Woods, Jacqueline Woods Thaxton, and Kevin Woods, and twin brother, Frank Junior Woods.

A funeral service will be held 2:30PM Saturday, July 14, 2018 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1705 N. Murray Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

A private family interment will take place on a later date at Pikes Peak National Cemetery.
